Thursday

Jordan (3-0, 1-0) vs. Mayde Creek (3-0, 1-0), 7 p.m. at Legacy Stadium

Last year: Jordan 42, Mayde Creek 7

  • Jordan and Mayde Creek head into a battle of unbeatens in week four, as it will be a clash of styles with two great defenses taking on each other in the second week of district play.
The Warriors come off a hard fought win over Tompkins, where Jordan’s defense stepped up and made the difference in the game to get the team the win.
the Warriors dual quarterback system worked well and the team threw for 176 yards in the air, while adding 168 yards on the ground, while allowing only 270 yards of offense from Tompkins while forcing four turnovers to get the win. Zion Jones had 69 yards on the ground and Andrew Marsh had 76 yards receiving to lead the way offensively.
Mayde Creek one upped even Jordan’s performance defensively, shutting out Taylor in the team’s district opener for a 7-0 win. The Rams allowed less than 150 yards of total offense and no scores in the win. Offensively, Daylin Robinson had 42 yards on the ground on 19 carries while completing 10 of 16 passes for 47 yards through the air. Trey Williams had just two carries for nine yards but scored the game’s only touchdown on a run. The Rams had three sacks in the game and both a fumble recovery and an interception to help clinch the win.
Both of these defenses have been the strength of their teams so far this year, while both also have explosive skill position players to get the ball to offensively. Both teams have started the season building very well and it will be interesting to see how they are able to move the ball this week against those strong defenses.

Paetow (1-1) vs. Tompkins (1-2, 0-1), 7:05 p.m. at Legacy Stadium

Last year: Tompkins 17, Paetow 7

  • Tompkins and Paetow will battle it out in the second week of district play, as both teams are in search of their first district win of the season, the Falcons after a loss and the Panthers coming off their bye week.
Tompkins stayed in its district opener against Jordan all night, but were unable to make the plays needed down the stretch to secure a win in week three. Turnovers doomed Tompkins in the game, as they fumbled and lost the ball four times, the last of which gave Jordan the deciding score of the game, when Tompkins had all the momentum early in the second half. Justin Thierheimer had 98 yards passing, while rushing for 50 yards and Ethan Meadows ran for 85 yards and a score to lead the way on the ground for Tompkins in the loss.
Paetow had a bye week after its win against Dekaney and come into this week with confidence. The Panthers have a strong defense that can challenge any team, but the problem early in the season for Paetow has been the offense. The Panthers have 32 points through their first two games but did get better offense in their second game of the season, scoring 18 points against Dekaney.
Tompkins will be angry and looking for a bounce back, while Paetow will be confident with an extra week of prep and the ability to get more of the offense down. It’s an important one for both as they try to gain a footing in district in their search for a playoff spot.

Friday

Taylor (1-2, 0-1) vs. Morton Ranch (0-3, 0-1), 7 p.m. at Legacy Stadium

Last year: Taylor 15, Morton Ranch 6

  • Morton Ranch and Taylor meet in the second week of district play both coming off a loss and looking to bounce back quickly as the two squads try and figure some things out early in the season, as both teams struggled offensively.
Morton Ranch had a tough draw in week one, going against Katy and having to go against the Tigers coming off a loss and while they battled the whole game they were unable to keep it close. The Mavericks lone score came from Tyler Gilmore, who ran in a score in the second half and the Mavericks defense was unable to keep Katy at bay during the game.
Taylor meanwhile, had a strong defensive game, but weren’t able to do enough offensively in a 7-0 loss to Mayde Creek. The Mavericks managed to get six first downs in the game and were led offensively by Chanze Harris, who had 66 yards receiving, while Scott Lewis threw for 98 yards but also two interceptions and Javion Garrett led the team with 18 yards rushing. Defensively, the Mustangs had a very strong game. They limited Mayde Creek to just one score and Taylor limited Mayde Creek to just 69 yards rushing and 40 yards passing. Alexander McMoore had a dominant day for the defense, having six tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery in the win, while Landon Saurage had five tackles and three tackles for loss as well.
Both teams will be looking at this game as a chance to bounce back and a chance to correct mistakes in their first district game. It’ll be an important one for both as they try to get back into the thick of the district race.

Katy (2-1, 1-0) vs. Cinco Ranch (1-2, 1-0), 7:30 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium

Last year:  Katy 42, Cinco Ranch 13

  • Always a big one between two rivals, the district schedule for the week closes with Katy taking on Cinco Ranch in a battle between two teams that started off district with two wins and expect to battle top spots in the district.
Katy had a strong bounce back performance against Morton Ranch and had a big day from sophomore call up running back Fayo George, who ran for two touchowns and had a very good game in the 47-4 win. Aqualis Jordan added a touchdown on the ground while Gunner Nelson threw for three touchowns, two to Israel Olotu-Judah and another to Jon Stephens as Katy went to 1-0 in district. The defense played well for the Tigers, only allowing one score. Katy’s injury bug was not helped in the game though, as sophomore running back MJ Benas went down early in the game after making a cut in the backfield in what was his first game action of the season after returning from a surgery last year.
Cinco Ranch meanwhile also started district on a strong note with its win over Seven Lakes. It was the Cougars offense that shined the most in the game, Marcus Gadlin had the best game of his varsity career, running for 146 yards and three touchdowns, while Charlie Adamoli threw for 143 yards and a touchdown while Matthew Courtois led the way receiving with 98 yards on four catches and a touchdown. The biggest improvement for the Cougars was with their defense. Cinco Ranch stepped up on that side of the ball after struggling in non-district and allowed under 250 yards of total offense to Seven Lakes, including only 121 yards rushing.
It’ll be a battle of two drastically different styles in the game. Katy will try and control the ball, control possession, play strong defense and keep Cinco Ranch at bay, while the Cougars like to play fast and make things more of a shootout offensively. It’ll be an important one as well and could help decide a spot in the upper echelons of the playoff race later on.
