Seven Lakes finishes second in Lone Star Cup

Seven Lakes finishes second in Lone Star Cup

Seven Lakes achieved its highest ever finish in the UIL Lone Star Cup and the highest ever finish of any school in Katy ISD history, finishing second in all of Class 6A with 93 points gained during the 2023-24 school year.

The Spartans not only achieved the highest ranking ever by a Katy ISD school, they were also the highest ranking Class 6A school from the entire Houston area, beating out the Woodlands, which was the only other Houston area school in the top 10.

The Lone Star Cup award is given to one school in each classification, honoring the best overall athletic and academic programs from Class 1A-6A. Each school’s composite score includes their standing in the following UIL events: Academics; Baseball; Basketball; Congress; Cross Country; Film; Football; Golf; Marching Band; Mariachi; Military March Band; One Act Play; Robotics BEST; Robotics FIRST; Soccer; Softball; Spirit; Swimming & Diving; Team Tennis; Tennis; Theatrical Design; Track & Field; Volleyball; and Wrestling.

“Texas is filled with outstanding academic and athletic talent,” said Katy ISD Athletic Director Lance Carter. It is great to know that Seven Lakes is ranked among the best overall schools.”

Seven Lakes top points came from boys’ and girls’ soccer. In boys’ soccer the Spartans earned 18 points after winning a state title and the girls soccer program added 14 points by making the state semifinal. The boys’ basketball program added 10 point by reaching the regional semifinals and the girls basketball program added eight points by also reaching the regional semifinals. Volleyball also made a huge impact, as the team reached the regional final and added 10 points. Seven Lakes also earned 10 points from the state academic meet.

This is the third straight year that the Spartans have finished in the top 10 of the Lone Star Cup and second straight year in the top five as they have moved up each of the past three years. In 2022, Seven Lakes finished ninth overall and last year and fifth last year. The Spartans previous highest finish ever was fourth overall in 2015.

Southlake Carroll won the Cup, finishing first with 111 points. Allen came in third place overall, while the Woodlands came in fourth and Westlake rounded out the top five.

Cinco Ranch was the second highest ranked Katy ISD school, coming in a tie for 32nd. The cougars earned 16 points from volleyball, where the team reached the state title game and earned 10 points from boys’ soccer after a regional final appearance. Cinco also earned six points from softball and eight points from baseball after both reached the third round of the playoffs.

Tompkins came in a tie for 35th in Class 6A. Volleyball earned six points and Tompkins earned four points from boys’ cross country, girls’ basketball, boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, baseball and softball.

Jordan came in a tie for 51st and got 10 points from girls’ soccer, also earning six points from boys’ soccer and boys’ basketball.

Katy had a tie for 75th overall and were led by 12 points from softball after a regional final appearance, also earning six points from baseball and six points from football.

Taylor finished tied for 162nd, with their top points getter being four from softball. Paetow finished tied for 233rd, earning two points from boys’ basketball. Morton Ranch finished tied for 243rd, earning one point from robotics.
